2024

Sunday, 24th March 2024, 7:30 pm
St Peter & St Paul’s Church, Deddington

Conductor: Benedict Goodall
Soprano: Becca Wilkins
Accompanied by The Karen Sharp Quartet

Including:
George Shearing – Songs and Sonnets from Shakespeare
Will Todd – Mass in Blue

This concert showcases two masterpieces from the choral-jazz world, and will also include sets from our professional jazz quartet, the Karen Sharp Quartet.

George Shearing’s Sonnets and Songs from Shakespeare (1999) sets texts by William Shakespeare and opens our concert in a fun and gentle jazz style. Will Todd’s Mass in Blue (2003) sets the ancient words of the Latin Mass with jazz accompaniment and blues-style soprano solos. For this concert, the choir is delighted to be supported by the Karen Sharp jazz quartet, with Becca Wilkins as our soloist. Becca is a rising jazz vocalist based in London. She is known as a bandleader and vocalist in her own right, and she has performed at a host of British jazz venues. Karen Sharp is an award winning jazz saxophonist, and performs regularly with a range of top jazz names, and we are very proud that she is also a member of the Choral Society.

In the beautiful setting of St Peter’s & St Paul’s Church, Deddington the concert promises to be an enjoyable combination of ancient texts with a warm jazz accompaniment.

Music for Remembrance and Peace

Jenkins – The Armed Man
Barber – Adagio for Strings
Bernstein – Chichester Psalms

Jenkins’ The Armed Man and Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms both reach thematically and structurally across communities and languages: Bernstein through his combination of traditional Hebrew psalms with a Christian musical setting, and Jenkins by embracing texts and musical idioms from many cultures.

A small number of people attending the concert were unable to buy a copy of the programme. Therefore, we are making it available as a free download.

Perfect entertainment for a summer evening, with traditional folk songs, delightful madrigals and well known part-songs.

Brahms – Ein deutsches Requiem

Unique amongst Requiems, Brahms’ masterpiece is a humane and consoling work intended to bring comfort to the living rather than to plead for the souls of the dead. The text, sung in German, is drawn from the Lutheran Bible and brought to intense dramatic life by one of the greatest choral composers.

Puccini – Messa di Gloria
Verdi – Stabat Mater

Unashamedly operatic and clearly influenced by his idol Verdi, the Messa di Gloria (more correctly, Messa a quattro voci) was written as a graduation piece when Puccini was only eighteen, shortly after Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle and Verdi’s Requiem, and brings the same sense of heightened drama, vitality, musical dexterity and sheer exuberance to the Latin mass.
