St. Peter & St. Paul’s Church, Deddington

Saturday, 4th April 2020, 7:30pm

7:30pm, Saturday, 18th December 2021 at St. Mary’s Church, Chipping Norton
Christmas Concert: Britten – St Nicolas & Excerpts from Handel – Messiah

OUR NEXT CONCERT:  Puccini – Messa di Gloria  /  Verdi – Stabat Mater  /  Saturday, 2nd April 2022  /  St. Peter & St. Paul’s Church, Deddington

Our friendly choral society (established in 1926) is looking for a new accompanist. The choir, with 100 members and a regular turnout between 60 and 80, has enjoyed some remarkable challenges – recent examples including Bach’s Mass in B Minor, Fanshawe’s African Sanctus, Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast and Britten’s Life of St Nicolas.

We are excited to have recently appointed Ben Goodall as our new Musical Director, taking over the reins from Peter Hunt who led the choir for the last 24 years.

There are no auditions as we believe that everyone can sing, and that with strong musical leadership and sufficient encouragement delivered with humour through engaging rehearsals, ordinary people can truly achieve extraordinary things. The choir’s exacting standards and our ambitious and wide-ranging repertoire are testament to that belief.

Members come from Chipping Norton and surrounding villages and we perform three concerts a year in the town and local churches, play a key role in the Music Festival and support local charities. We work with professional players and soloists, local musicians, excellent accompanists and young people from the county music service. A key partner is the Cheltenham Chamber Orchestra.

The Choral Society is seeking an outstanding rehearsal accompanist. The post is available from Spring 2022 and earlier if possible, and interested candidates will be asked to work with us at a rehearsal during February or March. Salary will be commensurate with experience and will reflect prevailing market rates.

The choir is committed to a fair, transparent and non-discriminatory appointments procedure.

Should you wish to apply, you will find a download link to the Application Pack below. The application process is set out in Section 5.

Chipping Norton and District Choral Society (CNCS) exists to provide amateur singers with the chance to sing varied and exciting choral works together in a supportive and friendly environment.

Our origins go back to the 1920s (see History). Recent concerts have included Bach’s Mass in B minor, Elgar’s Music Makers, Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem, Vivaldi and Handel to the unique sound and challenges of Fanshawe’s African Sanctus. Our last Concert was Britten’s Saint Nicolas, which we performed in St. Mary’s Church, Chipping Norton.

“My deep belief is that everyone can sing, and that given sufficient encouragement and strong leadership, ordinary people can truly achieve extraordinary things.

The choir is testament to that belief.

 Peter Hunt
Conductor & Musical Director, 1997 – 2021

“If I had to sum up what music means to me, whether it’s a beginner violinist playing in front of a family gathering, or a thousand people performing Mahler’s 8th Symphony, it is (to quote Hans Christian Andersen), ‘where words fail, music speaks’.

Chris Brown
Assistant Conductor & Accompanist

New members are always welcome, and whilst we strive to bring out the best performance from everyone, no auditions are required.

Currently we rehearse on Wednesday nights from 7:30 to 9:30 in the Methodist Church, Chipping Norton.

When the music stops a number of us — often including Ben, our Conductor — make our way to the Chequers pub in the town centre; it’s a great way to get to know people.

If you would like to join CNCS, please just come along. Rehearsal dates can be found on the Rehearsals page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of the Committee members by telephone or email. Either way, you will be given a very warm welcome.
