Gioachino Rossini: Petite Messe Solennelle

Saturday, 14 August 2021, 7.30pm

Church of St. Peter & St. Paul

Adults: £15
Children: Free

After one year, four months and nine days we are performing the Petite Messe Solennelle at last and it is such a joy to be singing together again. The Choral Society is delighted to invite back our original 2020 stellar line up of players and singers and extremely grateful for their patience during this difficult year.

Our instrumentalists also played with us in 2003. Anne Page (harmonuim) and Stewart Taylor (piano) will be joined by soprano Isla MacEwan, alto Lorna Day, tenor Phillip Costovski and James Berry, bass.

In addition to the mass, Anne and Stewart will be playing harmonium and piano music by Louis Vierne and Cesar Franck. This will be such a treat and a rare opportunity to hear the amazing Mustel harmonium which makes the Rossini such an evocative piece. Come and share with us this extraordinary operatic and joyous work and experience again the excitement of live music.

WHO ARE WE?

Chipping Norton and District Choral Society (CNCS) exists to provide amateur singers with the chance to sing varied and exciting choral works together in a supportive and friendly environment.

Our origins go back to the 1920s (see History). Recent concerts have included Bach’s Mass in B minor, Elgar’s Music Makers, Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem, Vivaldi and Handel to the unique sound and challenges of Fanshawe’s African Sanctus. Our last Concert was Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast, which we performed in Cheltenham Town Hall.

“My deep belief is that everyone can sing, and that given sufficient encouragement and strong leadership, ordinary people can truly achieve extraordinary things.

The choir is testament to that belief.

 Peter Hunt
Conductor & Musical Director

“If I had to sum up what music means to me, whether it’s a beginner violinist playing in front of a family gathering, or a thousand people performing Mahler’s 8th Symphony, it is (to quote Hans Christian Andersen), ‘where words fail, music speaks’.

Chris Brown
Assistant Conductor & Accompanist

THINKING ABOUT JOINING US?

New members are always welcome, and whilst we strive to bring out the best performance from everyone, no auditions are required.

We rehearse on Wednesday nights from 7:30 to 9:30 in Chipping Norton School’s music room. When the music stops a number of us often including Peter, our Conductor make our way to the Chequers pub in the town centre; it’s a great way to get to know people.

If you would like to join CNCS please just come along. Rehearsal dates can be found under Members’ NewsDirections can be found under How to Find Us.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact one of the Committee members by telephone or email. Either way, you will be given a very warm welcome.
