WHO ARE WE?
Chipping Norton and District Choral Society (CNCS) exists to provide amateur singers with the chance to sing varied and exciting choral works together in a supportive and friendly environment.
Our first rehearsal, as the Chipping Norton Choral Society and Singing Club, was on Wednesday 15 May 1872. Recent concerts have included Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, Verdi’s Stabat Mater, Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on Christmas Carols, and a Sing Day of Faure’s Requiem.
“I believe that if you can speak, you can sing. The normal range people use when they speak, the dynamics (loud and soft) and the pitch modulation (high and low) are a sort of singing. It’s my job as a choral conductor to help people understand and enjoy using their voices, working together to create something magical!”
Benedict Goodall
Conductor & Musical Director (2021 – present)
“I have a life-long passion for classical music; it began when I studied oboe (primarily) and piano at Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester. I left with two grade 8 distinctions and decided to forsake the oboe and make a career in piano accompaniment and teaching…that together with music administration and playing the organ. I believe that enthusiastic amateurs, just like professionals in fact, develop and grow when they feel valued and when they become engaged through friendly support.”
Rowena Gibbons
Accompanist (2022 – present)
THINKING ABOUT JOINING US?
New members are always welcome, and whilst we strive to bring out the best performance from everyone, no auditions are required.
We rehearse on Wednesday nights from 7:30 to 9:30 in the Chipping Norton Town Hall.
When the music stops a number of us — often including Ben, our Conductor — make our way to the Chequers pub in the town centre; it’s a great way to get to know each other better.
If you would like to join CNCS or have any questions, please contact Eric Clubley, chair@cncs.org.uk, or just turn up at one of our rehearsals – details can be found on the Rehearsals page and you will be given a very warm welcome. Do check out our Facebook page too.
