Bob Chilcott: The Voyage
Saturday 16th June 2018
Chipping Norton School
Chipping Norton Choral Society will be hosting a Community Singing Day on Saturday June 16th 2018. The material for the day will be Bob Chilcott’s The Voyage and Vivaldi’s Gloria. They are both relatively easy pieces and Chippy Choral Soc (as we call ourselves) would love you to join us for a day of fun with them – regardless of your prior singing experience. We guarantee you a core of people who will know the works and who will give you support if you need it so that you get the best from the experience!
The Voyage is a collaboration between Bob Chilcott and author Charles Bennett which was commissioned by Age UK Oxfordshire as part of a project to highlight and combat loneliness. The singers assume the role of narrator, guiding the listener on a journey made by boat, with nine choral songs presenting their own stories within this larger excursion. The outer movements provide a watery framework with rippling figures and gentle choral waves. An air of nostalgia pervades ‘My father’s boat’ and ‘What we did on our holiday’, while the central songs use naval and meteorological imagery to speak of some of life’s difficulties. Soliloquies between the choral songs highlight a variety of solo instruments.
From the early 1700s Vivaldi’s Gloria is a joyous piece with distinctive melodies and rhythms, which are characteristic of all of Vivaldi’s music, giving it an immediate and universal appeal.
You will be guided through these pieces in a series of workshops and rehearsals under the expert direction of Chippy Choral Soc Musical Director, Peter Hunt. The sessions will be held in the main hall at Chipping Norton School with the brilliant Bernard West accompanying on piano. The scratch choir formed on the day will be accompanied in The Voyage by the North Cotswold Chamber Choir and a local youth choir prepared in advance of the sing day by Matthew Smallwood.
Mid-afternoon tea/coffee and cakes will be provided at the school, but please bring your own packed lunch.
Towards the end of the afternoon, we will take a short walk through Chipping Norton to the delightful St Mary’s Church. Here there will be a last rehearsal to allow singers to get used to and feel comfortable with the new accoustic. Finally we will give a performance of the pieces which will be open to the public.
